Very thorough. Well written.
a lovely knitting book with gorgeous cable patterns. the important factor in this book is the SSE , stockinette stitch equivalent for each of the cable designs so one knows how wide the cable pattern is. The photos of the cables are clear and the directions are well written, both in graph form and word form. The reason for the four stars is because of the small size of the print and small size of the graphs, I will even say they are tiny. I am sure any knitter would have been willing to pay a bit more for a larger book in order to have bigger print for the directions and graphs. Therefore for any pattern be sure to have a copy machine that enlarges the pattern so that you can read it easily. However this is an important book for any knitter who loves to knit cables.
Filled with serious mistakes. I am a 35 year knitter, I do fair isle shetland lace etc, and I bought this book hoping to find some new variations I'd enjoy. But the fact is the patterns are so full of mistakes that even if you like the pattern, you won't be able to do it or you'll have to spend lots of frustrating time finding out where the mistake is. Every pattern I looked at had serious mistakes with the stitch count. For example, one had 36 stitches but in row 4 she only accounts for 32 of them and and then in row 5 goes back to 36. I found it over and over again. The author should be ashamed. Obviously no one checked these stitches before print. I have never bought one of her books before and I won't again. I returned it.I feel sorry for the less experienced knitter who buys this to actually learn something, it will only bring frustration and defeat.
This is the cable book that you wished every other cable book you ever purchased was AND it has usable projects in it, lots of them. Lovely useful wearable interesting projects. So even if you never intend to design your own its a bargain for the price. The technical parts roll up in a steady progression, building each new chapter on top of the last - THIS IS A MASTER CLASS. Making cables, varying cables, controlling cables, substituting cables, rolling around in a cabled fantasy. Norah explains the back of the cable how to make it reversible or interesting if not exactly reversible, which is a thing with scarves, blankets and afghans which are not always right side up/out. Its lovely to look at and the photographs are clear and the samples nicely styled (Jared Flood so no surprise there). The sample swatches are a neutral beige or off white plied worsted yarn that shows every stitch. This book is awesome. There is the bulky knit cabled cardigan to rule all cabled cardigans. so em.... the type is tiny and at a fixed size on the kindle - the digital version is very high resolution so it's easy to zoom in on the text and the charts on my iPad (or any of the larger tablets), but could be a problem for some people and it would not work on the black and white kindles. The size of the text would be an issue for me if I only had the printed version.
While the content is worth 5 stars, the Kindle Edition is next to worthless. This has NOT been formatted for kindle and it is very hard to read. In addition, conveniences such the ability to search, change font size, highlight, etc are missing. The publisher, Abrams, seems to make a habit of this. It's really a shame. I'd gladly pay an extra few dollars to get a copy I can actually read and use.
First of all, I am a knitter NOT a designer. Now with that said, I will occasionally customize my knitwear according to my own personal style/taste using others designs/patterns. The first 31 pages are worth the entire purchase price of this book. Norah's tips and techniques are priceless and will benefit the beginner, as well as the experienced cable knitter. Add the Sideways Pullover, Scarf, and Chunky Cardigan patterns - my three favorite patterns of the fifteen - and you just bought the mother lode!
The content in this book is amazing! Norah did a great job. The digital copy is incredibly hard to read, especially the patterns. I spent nearly 2 hrs with amazon customer support trying to get the book to load on Kindle for PC so that I could get the patterns large enough to read. I'm 37 and have good eyesight, but the pages were fuzzy on the kindle for chrome and too small on my other devices. This book would not load on kindle for PC. the 2 star rating is for my disappointment in the publisher getting this book in a format that could be readable/usable digitally and for amazon for nearly 2 hrs of circular customer support that didn't resolve my issue.
The text of this poorly rendered Kindle book can neither be zoomed to a comfortable reading font size nor is the book searchable! Whoever heard of an ebook that cannot be searched!?Not only is it unreadable on my laptop or tablet using the Kindle app, this book cannot be read in the Kindle Cloud Reader! WTF!?I bought several knitting books more than a month ago and just viewed this awful book for the first time tonight, so it is too late to request a refund. :(If it were possible, I would rate this awful book zero star because it is totally useless!!Edit: I apparently viewed this book and commented about it on another review 1 month ago ... old age!
I haven't been into cables. Seeing this book on special, I decided to order it. There are a multitude of cables in a clean format that is easy to understand. There are written directions as well as charts along with what each symbol means on that same page. The examples of these cables are in a neutral colored yarn with clear stitches that show well against the page. Included are project patterns with these well presented cable directions. I've tried two cables so far and have been successful with them. I would have given this kindle edition 5 stars except I have one issue. I order kindle knitting books to save room in my house. Usually, if I find a stitch pattern I'm going to use in a project, I print it to keep with that project. With this book, I can not do that as you can not print. The only option is to write out the cable pattern. I am afraid that I am going to miscopy and mess the cable up.
